Hanukkah (also known as Chanukah, Hanukah, Hannuka and the Festival of Lights) is an eight-day Jewish holiday that usually takes place between late November and late December. It commemorates the victory of the Maccabees, a Jewish rebel army, over the Syrians in 165 B.C.E., as well as the subsequent rededication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem. Jews around the world celebrate with eight nights of merriment. Traditions include lighting the menorah, exchanging gifts and enjoying treats cooked in oil
Hanukkah will be celebrated on the eight days beginning Sundown December 11, 2009 til Sundown December 19, 2009.
Continuing the current trend of large-scale mergers and acquisitions, it was announced today at a press conference that Christmas and Hanukkah will merge. An industry source said that the deal had been in the works for about 1300 years.
While details were not available at press time, it is believed that the overhead cost of having twelve days of Christmas and eight days of Hanukkah was becoming prohibitive for both sides. By combining forces, we're told, the world will be able to enjoy consistently high-quality service during the Fifteen Days of Chrismukah, as the new holiday is being called.
Massive layoffs are expected, with lords a-leaping and maids a-milking being the hardest hit. As part of the conditions of the agreement, the letters on the dreydl, currently in Hebrew, will be replaced by Latin, thus becoming unintelligible to a wider audience.
Also, instead of translating to "A great miracle happened there," the message on the dreydl will be the more generic "Miraculous stuff happens." In exchange, it is believed that Jews will be allowed to use Santa Claus and his vast merchandising resources for buying and delivering their gifts.
One of the sticking points holding up the agreement for at least three hundred years was the question of whether Jewish children could leave milk and cookies for Santa even after having eaten meat for dinner. A breakthrough came last year, when Oreos were finally declared to be Kosher. All sides appeared happy about this.
A spokesman for Christmas, Inc., declined to say whether a takeover of Kwanzaa might not be in the works as well. He merely pointed out that, were it not for the independent existence of Kwanzaa, the merger between Christmas and Chanukah might indeed be seen as an unfair cornering of the holiday market. Fortunately for all concerned, he said, Kwanzaa will help to maintain the competitive balance. He then closed the press conference by leading all present in a rousing rendition of "Oy Vey, All Ye Faithful."

2009 Keynote Speaker: Football Hall of Famer Lem Barney speaking on Leadership and Team Work
One of the greatest players to ever play the game and a good-will ambassador for the National Football League describe one of the Detroit Lions' favorites--Lem Barney. He truly is a man of class for all seasons. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992, Barney had a brilliant 11-year career with the Detroit Lions from 1967-77. He set the standard as one of the game's all-around players as a star cornerback and punt and kickoff returner. While his on-the-field prowess earned him Hall-of-Fame status, his big smile, friendly disposition, and his commitment to give back to the community mark the true mettle of this man. Lem has supported countless charities and worthy causes with the same enthusiasm and dedication he showed in his sparkling pro football career.

Christmas In Detroit
THU 2009-12-17 Detroit’s top celebrities and musicians are joining together for charity this holiday season, lending their time and talent to 'Christmas in Detroit,' a holiday CD set benefiting the homeless and the needy in the Metro-Detroit area. Christmas in Detroit is a unique 3-CD collection of 42 amazing songs by Detroit artists with recordings of both original material and classic holiday favorites. In addition to songs from the first two 'Christmas in Detroit' CDs (1992 and 1993), 17 new tracks have been recorded by artists and personalities like Stewart Francke, The Hell Drivers, Devin Scillian, Jeff Daniels, Larry Lee and Back in the Day, Dave Edwards and rising stars Molly Hunt and Quentin Dennard. The new songs were produced and recorded at Harmonie Park Music by brothers Brian and Mark Pastoria over the last two months, with Mark mixing most of the 17 new songs.
'We received overwhelming interest from local musicians to take part in Christmas in Detroit. Their generosity is inspiring,' said Brian Pastoria, co-founder of Harmonie Park and Christmas in Detroit. 'Some of these artists are household names. Others are soon to be.'
Proceeds from the CD will support S.A.Y. Detroit, a nonprofit organization founded by author Mitch Albom – who also writes and performs on the CD - dedicated to rebuilding the inner city one life at a time by funding homeless programs in the area. Christmas in Detroit will be released December 1 and will be available to order online at www.ReverbNation.com/ChristmasInDetroit for $20.00 and for purchase at more than 100 Biggby, National Coney Island, and Tubby’s locations in Metro Detroit. 'This is who we are in Detroit,'said Albom. 'When there is a need, we pull together.' And with our musical tradition, when we pull together, something beautiful results.
The Christmas in Detroit artists will showcase their talent in a free concert at the Renaissance Center’s Wintergarden, on December 17 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.
From 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM..Location: Renaissance Center's Wintergarden. Detroit, MI. 48243 . Please let them know that you saw the notice in the Peggy Jo Studio Newsletter

The intimate tour — filled with history, architectural gems, and ideas for decorating and restoration — begins with wine, appetizers and jazz at the first home. The party will travel on guided luxury buses to each home and circle back for desserts and music. Scholars and art experts at each home. Tickets and info at palmerwoods.org.

Sailing, Pure and Sometimes Simple Detroit Regional Yacht-racing Association
WED 2010-01-06 'Sailing, Pure and Sometimes Simple'
is a potpourri look at the joys of sailing from four different viewpoints by people who are living their dreams. Chuck Knowles and Margi Schneider are a year round live aboard
couple who regularly leave the daily routine of their Detroit jobs to explore the world from the water. “Skip” Gmeiner has enjoyed growing up on, sailing and maintaining a famous NY 32 classic yacht Apache that has been in his family, and at the DYC, since 1940. John Barbour’s local racing prowess is well known to many of us who have raced the bigger boats; he will share his Mackinac race experiences with us. And finally, Dawn Riley, a local woman who got her start on Lake St. Clair followed her dream to become the pioneering CEO and Captain of America True (America’s Cup Campaign) and one of the best-known sailors in the world. Join us to hear their stories at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on the evening of January 6, 2010 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm for the first seminar in this year’s outstanding series.
All of the details are here Starts at 7:00 PM..Location: Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. 788 Lake Shore Road, Grosse Pointe Shores, MI 48236 (313) 884-2500 web http://www.gpyc.org/
