MON 2013-12-09

Yes, it's that time again! The mobile industry is a very dynamic environment and 2013 was no exception. Join Mobile Monday Detroit for its annual meeting on the topic, "Mobile Year in Review".

The format for this December 9th event will be slightly different from our standard meetings in that this meeting is structured to encourage broad audience participation. Mobile Monday Detroit organizers Linda Daichendt and Randy Nunez will review our Mobile Monday Detroit events of the past year, as well as highlighting key industry issues of 2013 including:

  • BlackBerry's 2013 Journey: what's next?
  • The Microsoft story: smartphones, tablets, and Ballmer's departure
  • Android domination of the smartphone and tablet market
  • Open Source Mobile OS's: Do they have a future?
  • Mobile Payments: are they mainstream yet?
  • Wearable Computing: fad or game-changer?

And many other topics of interest

Bring your thoughts, perspectives, opinions, and questions with you as together we reflect on past events to understand the future impact that they will have on our industry - and all the industries impacted by these technologies.

Get Together and Support Michigan Military Families
Business and Professional Event

THU 2013-12-12
Welcome to Support the Troops 3: This Time, It's Personal

Also known as The Great Detroitnet.org Anti-Politically Correct Happy Merry ChrismaKwanziKah Event!

It's the end of the year, folks. One of the things that we're most proud of in this past year is what started with our December 2011 event and continued with our December 2012 event to support Michigan military troops and their families, and so we've decided that we're doing it again this year. We're not quite sure what all will exactly be going on--so keep on eye out for details as we get closer to the date.

And this time---it's personal.

Why?

Well, this time around, we're not going to have our usual whipping post uhhh, I mean "organizer" by our sides as we do this. For those who have been to events in past years, you know that Russ Dotson has been crucial in getting the events of the last two years up and running.

He's not going to be here this time.

Why? Because he's been deployed out, that's why. Yep, he'll be on active duty overseas, and he'll be stationed with a whole bunch of Marines, and so yep, this time there's a personal flavor to it.

Oh, we'll still have a lot of the folks involved that have come to the events in previous years, but Russ unfortunately won't be around to witness this one firsthand.

We realize that we always say this, but we particularly mean it this time - we hope you can join us.

It's not a Pink Slip Party, it's mostly a Casual Networking Event, but---honestly, most of all, we just want to have a nice little gathering with you folks to wrap up the year. Thank you for being part of our group, thank you for believing in us, thank you for following us all over the mitten as we've had events all over Michigan this year, and, well, let's kick back, have a drink or two and relax. You're still allowed to network, you're still allowed to be looking to hire people, you're still allowed to be looking for a job---none of that's "banned" or anything. We just really want to end the year with a mellow gathering of everyone who's either been an integral part of the group this year or just joining and wants to get a feel for who we are.

In addition to the great feedback about last two events like this, we also had a lot of requests to get back to Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills---and so, tah-dah---we are.

So, you know the drill: No agenda. No speakers. No 30-second commercials. No cover charge. No free lunch. Never. Just networking with IT professionals. Plain and simple.

Detroitnet.org was started by IT professionals for IT professionals. We didn't like any other group out there, so we started our own! At our events, you might meet some recruiters, some out of work developers, some sales guys, some network admins, some web guys and some senior level management---

So come on out, bring some business cards (or don't, it's OK), meet some like-minded people in the Metro Detroit area, and who knows, you could meet a life-long friend, a new business partner, or no one at all---it's what you make of it that makes Detroitnet.org great.

As always, we are networking Detroit, one beer at a time.

See you at 5:01 at Rochester Mills in Rochester Hills!

FRI. Dec. 13 Events

Fantasticks
Stagecrafters

This event spans the period from 2013-12-06 to 2013-12-22

This timeless fable of love and discovery tells the tale of teens Luisa and Matt, next-door-neighbors who fall in love. When they discover their fathers have manipulated the courtship, rebellion and worldly temptation threatens to pull them apart. The Fantasticks remains the longest-running theatrical production in the world with its simple, nostalgic and universal appeal. The musical score includes unforgettable classics such as "Try to Remember" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain."

Located in the former balcony of the Baldwin Theatre, 2nd Stage is Stagecrafters' Contemporary Theatre. With its 100-seat intimate setting, the 2nd Stage is a black box theatre with a simple, unadorned performance space, and a versatile and easy-to-change stage. The audience sits in close proximity to the stage which lends itself to the types of shows mounted. The focus is on the story, writing, and performances rather than technical elements of the show.

2nd Stage's 2013-14 season includes Proof, The Fantasticks and [title of show] - click for a snapshot of the entire 2nd Stage season. Join us as we continue our uncompromising dedication to creating an enriching, quality theatrical experience for the community. Season tickets are available - visit the Season Tickets page in our Box Office for more information.

Stair Climb
Catholic Alumni Club

SUN 2013-12-15

The only way to enjoy winter is by keeping warm. If to you that means staying active, making time for aerobic exercise, then come out to do some intensified jogging, a.k.a. "stair climbing" in downtown Birmingham! We will have six flights of this glass-enclosed but unheated urban playground to work with. Park on the highest level (6th) of the City of Birmingham Parking Garage. It is the tallest non-apartment building garage in the area, and is located at the corner of Brown & Peabody, in downtown Birmingham. It's one block south of 15 Mile Rd., in between Woodward and Old Woodward. The first two hours of parking are FREE! We will use this time to scale the South Tower (repeatedly) and then to grab a bite to eat afterward at Leo's Coney Island, only a block away, at 154 South Old Woodward Ave. We might even "reward" ourselves after that with Cold Stone Ice Cream, at 108 South Old Woodward Ave! Participants must be in good health already, or may meet us for dinner, starting shortly after 5 PM. Please RSVP.
