Embrace Life Always

Without a single word, this says it all This is the new "wear your seatbelt" ad the UK is doing - started by some dude not hired to do it, but because the cause is important to him, he came up with this idea, and now it's being hailed across the world as a "beautiful" commercial. ---And now the video has become so popular with the general public that people are forwarding it to friends/family on their own so quickly that it has spread all over the world in a very short time. Check out this remarkable ad.

FRI. Dec. 14 Events

Hanukkah begins at sunset on Saturday December 8, 2012 and ends at sunset on Sunday December 16, 2012.

We have focused on the miracle-thing and I think we often overlook the message of Hanukkah. To me, the core of the holiday is the cleaning of the temple--- The accomplishment was in restoring the temple to the purpose for which it was built. Now think of the temple as a symbol. Perhaps it represents my life. The world has tried to use me for its own (perhaps good, but none-the-less extrinsic) purposes. But now I can rededicate myself to my own original purpose. - Ralph Levy, "Hanukkah - Another View"

TubaChristmas
Art Show

SAT 2012-12-15
Motor City Brass Band is taking part in a national Christmas tradition known around the world as TubaChristmas on Saturday, Dec. 15 at Oakland University. If you play tuba or euphonium, you are invited to join the fun. If you don't play either of the deep clef workhorses, don't worry. The Motor City Brass Band, metro Detroit's British-style brass ensemble, and the collected and talented Company are going to put on a holiday show that's great fun for the audience.

TubaChristmas takes place Saturday, December 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Varner Recital Hall located on the Oakland University campus, in Rochester Hills. Oakland University's Dr. Kenneth Kroesche, Travis Professor of Low Brass, will conduct the all-volunteer ensemble. Event check-in for all players is 8 a.m. Rehearsal will begin at 8:30 a.m. Dr. Kroesche received his doctorate from the University of Michigan and is recognized throughout the United States as a leading performer, clinician, conductor, and teacher of low brass. Throughout his career, his experience has ranged from performing a euphonium concerto with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center to having taught in the public schools. Merry TubaChristmas was created by Harvey Philips in 1974 in honor of his teacher, the great tubist, William J. Bell, who was born Christmas Day, 1902. Celebrating its 39th anniversary this holiday season, TubaChristmas concerts will be presented in more than 250 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Every Christmas season, tuba and euphonium players of all ages, from specific geographic areas, gather to pay respect to William J. Bell and to all the great artists and teachers who represent their heritage. Depending on the population of any given geographic area, TubaChristmas ensembles may attract multiples of 100 participants, ages 8 to over 90 years. Every TubaChristmas performance features traditional Christmas carols especially arranged for the first TubaChristmas, (December 22, 1974, in NYC's "The Rink" at Rockefeller Center) by American composer Alec Wilder (died Christmas Eve, 1980). Through Wilder, TubaChristmas concerts pay grateful tribute to composers who have embraced these noble instruments with solo and ensemble compositions.
The warm, rich organ-like sound of the tuba euphonium choir has won the ears and hearts of every audience. It's no wonder that TubaChristmas has become an established Christmas tradition among cities throughout the world. TubaChristmas takes place all over the nation in the month of December. In Michigan, tuba and euphonium players will unite in nine different cities in addition to Rochester Hills, for the celebration: Ann Arbor, Detroit, Engadine, Flint, Grand Rapids, Howell, Traverse City, and White Lake Township. Attendance at the TubaChristmas concert is free of charge for the general public. This event is open to tuba and euphonium players of all ages and skill levels.
Registration is $5 for performers. Music can be purchased (and then used year after year) for $20.00. For questions, musicians may call Randy Safford at 248-670-1076
. A mandatory rehearsal will be held at 8:30 a.m.the morning of December 15th in Room 110, Varner Recital Hall at Oakland University. Participants must attend the rehearsal in order to perform at the concert. Please bring your own music stand.
Oakland University is located at 2200 N. Squirrel Rd., Rochester Hills, MI 48309. Free parking is available in several lots adjacent to Varner Hall, including lots 36, 26 and 24. This event is co-sponsored by Oakland University.More information is available at www.tubachristmas.com. Motor City Brass Band takes pride in producing a quality and entertaining musical experience for the whole family. Currently ranked among the top brass bands in the country, MCBB continues to musically define itself as an integral part of the growing national brass band movement and competes in the North American Brass Band Association Championships and the U.S. Open Brass Band Championships. MCBB has been led by the artistic vision of conductor and music director Craig Strain since its inception in 1996. To find out more, please visit mcbb.org.

MSDA Monthly Dance
Michigan Swing Dance Association

SUN 2012-12-16
Every month, the MSDA holds a kick-ass dance, usually on the third Sunday. Our dance is held at the gorgeous Rhythm -n- Shoes Ballroom Dance Studio in Bloomfield Hills. There are lessons at 3 PM and a dance party from 4 to 8 PM. The music is California Mix with East and West Coast Swing, Hustle, Ballroom, Latin and Country and our DJ, Phil Dorroll, takes requests. We throw in a Speed Dating Dance and a Newcomer Mixer just to change things up a bit. A light meal is served, as well as snacks, soft drinks and cake, plus we give away door prizes to people whose tickets are drawn.

For members, the dance is $9 and the lesson is free. For non-members, the lesson is $4 and the dance is $11. If you join the club at the dance, you save $6. .

The MSDA dances are attended by couple and singles alike. For the most part, our members are single and we are always happy to see new members join. The MSDA is like a big, friendly family and we are very comfortable asking each other to dance. In other words, men ask women and women ask men. That's our format. If you have never been to an MSDA dance, your first visit is FREE!!

SUNDAY, DEC. 16TH 10:00 AM LATIN MASS AT HISTORICAL ST. JOSEPH'S IN DETROIT Join us at St. Joseph's Parish in Detroit for a Latin Mass. It is the 3rd Sunday of Advent which is Gaudete (Pink) Sunday. The Mass will be sung by the St. Joseph Cappella (vocals only), including Missa Dixit Maria by Hans Leo Hassler and Ave Maria by Joseph Bonnet. Take I-75 south and get off on the Lafayette exit. At Monroe or any other bridge to the left, cross the freeway and turn left on the service drive. Keeping right on the service drive, turn right on Antietam (just before Gratiot). Antietam St. will snake left and then right. After the right turn, you will see St. Joseph's coming up on your left at Orleans St. (Church may be reached from Gratiot, but the route from the Gratiot exit takes some tricky maneuvering.) Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings (DCWS) will be joined by area high school choirs for their annual concert of the season, Holiday Brass on Sunday, December 9 at First Presbyterian Church of Royal Oak at 7:30 p.m. with a repeat performance on Sunday December 16 at Christ Church Grosse Pointe at 7:30 p.m. Members of Rochester Community Schools' Stoney Creek High School Choir will perform at both concert events. Macomb's Dakota High School Choir will also perform on December 16. Both concerts will begin with a 6:45 p.m. Sing-Along led by the choirs.
The December 9 concert will include the world premiere performance of "Christmas Cantata" a new work for brass and choir by Brandon Ulrich, Choir Director at Stoney Creek High School.
"Stoney Creek and Dakota choirs were chosen based on their excellent choral reputations," says DCWS Executive Director Maury Okun. "We're thrilled to have these choirs and that we're able to give local students a chance to perform with professional musicians. Audience members can expect a performance that is unique, entertaining and musically exquisite." Leading off the concert will be solo choir works selected by the two choirs. DCWS brass musicians will then take the stage for festive selections masterfully arranged for various combinations of brass instruments. Works will include: "I Wonder As I Wander" and "The Christmas Song" -- both arranged for brass dectet, and "Various Christmas Carols" a quintet medley of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "O Tannenbaum," and "Angels We Have Heard on High." Two quartets, one of trumpets and the other of trombones, will come together to present "The First Noel" and "Deck the Halls." The concerts will end in a combined performance of musicians and choir. Both concerts will include combined performances of "Bells" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Both performances will end with a joint performance by DCWS and Stoney Creek Choir of Ulrich's "Christmas Cantata" a major new work for brass dectet, percussion and choir. Tickets for Holiday Brass are $35 regular, $30 senior and $10 for students. Tickets are $5 more at the door. To order, visit www.detroitchamberwinds.org or call 248-559-2095 .
