Eleanor Cauley 1908-2007

If what I believe is true, and I think it is, my mother is in heaven with her mother and my father. She passed away on Friday December 14 at the age of 99. If she was strong enough she probably would have held on to her 100th birthday just to please us. She is in heaven because she lived a saintly life. She was the essence of giving.

She raised five children under five in the time when our country was coming out of the depression and into the wartime years. She cared for her mother until she passed away. She nursed her father through his final days and she cared for my father as he finished his life.I know that when times really got tough she sought counseling from Father Solanus Casey of the Capuchins.

My mother gave, paraphrasing Kahlil Gibran, of herself, She did not give for recognition, or the joy of giving but like the flowers give off their aroma freely and unencumbered.

When my father died in 1984, for the first time in her life, my mother had the chance to do what she wanted to do and she pursued a high school diploma at the age of 76. It was in her English class that she was given the assignment to write a poem. She not only wrote one she wrote many. One was published in the Macomb Daily and again in the PJSN August 20, 2007 where she told of her meeting my father at a dance and their 53 year marriage. The one posted below was written to be her farewell message and is included in the funeral home pamphlet .

Life's Seasons. by Eleanor C. Cauley

Spring- a time of promise
Eagerly reaching out for Love and Life
Going forth with gusto!
Grab the brass ring.

Summer-watching the children grow
Each one a flower- none alike
All so precious
Summer Storms, followed by skies of blue
The nest becomes empty- but not my life.

Autumn- Harvest Time seeing grandchildren
and great-grandchildren play and grow-
Gods wonderful gifts
Some sorrow- so much joy.

Alas! Winter approaches.
Weep not for me, I'm still with you.
Because you are part of me
Love one another as I have loved you
My pride-my joy
My reason for living-now
My final Adieu.

Thank you Peggy Jo for putting this in your newsletter

Say thanks to our troops

Xerox "says Thanks" to Troops. According to the site, Let's Say Thanks is "a national program designed to deliver Cars from Troopsthousands of cards to soldiers overseas with messages of support from home. While the war itself is an issue I won't discuss here, support for the troops is widespread (and well-deserved). Xerox uses its technology to connect consumers to U.S. troops in a way that is not self-serving.

Card designs were chosen from submissions from children across the country which is a media opp in and of itself. And, in today's consumer-generated media world, it is great to see the option for children to submit their own designs. You can also download the designs and have a copy of the card mailed to your home.

The program takes a smart and engaging approach. And Chrismas time is a good time to send a card to our troops.

" Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous - and how well I know it."
Psalm 139:14

From our readers.

Dear Peggy Jo,

I was in a family restaurant in Royal Oak and I asked for a take home box. When the wBox Topaitress brought the box and wrote the date and contents on the box top (see attached). In addition she drew a Christmas Greeting.  I complimented her on her choice of “Merry Christmas” rather than the more common “Happy Holidays” and I also told her about your newsletter and the article on this subject.

I think that many people think that “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings” is the proper greeting just because the retail industry uses these phrases in all of their advertising, probably to save the cost of multiple signs recognizing all of the holidays.

I clicked on the two links you provided in your December 11 issue and I feel that we should be saying Merry Christmas in a joyful manner and not as an “in your face challenge”. I agree with Ben Stein’s position and I will not take offense if someone wishes me a “Happy Chanukka” or any other greeting. St. John Bosco’s life teaches us that no one can be insulted with any act made with good intentions. To be an insult, it must be deliberate.
